So your dad's dad is your <i>chin-harabeoji </i> 친(親)할아버지 (lit. "close/intimate/kind grandfather") and your mom's mom is your <i>oui-halmoni </i>외(外)할머니 (lit. "outside/foreign grandmother").</p><p>This method of referring to them seems to have traditional gendered connotations. Think of how a wife would leave her own household upon marriage and live in the man's household, which may likely have been with or at least very near his parents. The kids then would experience life closer and more intimately with the dad's parents. Or at least, social family structures would make them the de facto true family. </p><p>We foreigners aren't completely foreign (pun intended) to this notion. Wives (at least until very recently) "lost" their own surnames and became nominally absorbed into the husband's family. </p><p>So it's understandable that some Koreans might find this continued nomenclature problematic or sexist. </p><p>In fact back in 2021 the Korean Ministry of Gender Equality and Family even put out a post about this. On their Instagram page they listed some phrases that might need to be revised, including these.</p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj9p8F8fYZoSyrT63bZFx89KPqZTSL3yigxd09VKha8PrgXBsJEpVhc9GWX8GtqnefKpQrkDcEZ6gKFg6FKYPkpWC3raxC4MMuusxI5UTaU2_g1YlhoWeGtHR-2bWTRIDMsYm6RkUU2yOZrNZNszlxh2X9ZmWKz_p-lNmM2zRrwJVKkOe-GVSquxPCLmg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="775" data-original-width="700" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj9p8F8fYZoSyrT63bZFx89KPqZTSL3yigxd09VKha8PrgXBsJEpVhc9GWX8GtqnefKpQrkDcEZ6gKFg6FKYPkpWC3raxC4MMuusxI5UTaU2_g1YlhoWeGtHR-2bWTRIDMsYm6RkUU2yOZrNZNszlxh2X9ZmWKz_p-lNmM2zRrwJVKkOe-GVSquxPCLmg" width="217" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">친할아버지? 외할머니? Image: <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CWo_hStA32x/?img_index=4">Korean MOFEF Instagram</a></td></tr></tbody></table><br />Since these terms seem to suggest an implicit traditional bias for dad's family, what else can we say? Apparently one solution, that <a href="https://www.seoul.co.kr/news/society/2021/11/25/20211125500183">some articles</a> suggest are already being adopted today, is to refer to the grandparents by where they live. So there can be "Busan granny" and "Seoul grandpa" in modern times. </p><p>Something to think about. I'm sure however you refer to him, your 할배 will still love you. </p><p><br /></p><div class="blogger-post-footer"><br />=====<br />

And yes, that's alien like a man from outer space, not the alien as in your Korean Alien Registration Card. <div><br /></div><div>I saw this phrase in a headline today about a concept device from Samsung, a sort of wrap-around bendable smartphone that can serve as a bracelet while also capable of being folded flat to use as a smartphone. Pretty wild piece of tech, for sure. </div><div><br /></div><div></div><blockquote><div><a href="https://www.insight.co.kr/news/463115">이재용의 삼성, 외계인 고문해 손목에 감을 수 있게 만든 '팔찌 휴대폰' 공개했다</a></div><div>Lee Jae-yong's Samsung unveils an "alien torture" bracelet-phone you can wrap around your wrist </div></blockquote><div></div><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEheSg-SJJDZnidMTOTQt_brzdL-LoNUyJL19Q7iXLCdbpz3NufydJx8eQ5EMP_nY_UBXtoSuQc3SJQfQbABXo0dVDtDOX4Aae82M1AE7Lh1yk3nA0Ro6mvMXsNH7aOLle3srdAAH1bqy870yCMSUV4XC6dK6rBM1m8g5p1UgrFVQ3oR9zwIbmgI39JveA" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1332" data-original-width="2128" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEheSg-SJJDZnidMTOTQt_brzdL-LoNUyJL19Q7iXLCdbpz3NufydJx8eQ5EMP_nY_UBXtoSuQc3SJQfQbABXo0dVDtDOX4Aae82M1AE7Lh1yk3nA0Ro6mvMXsNH7aOLle3srdAAH1bqy870yCMSUV4XC6dK6rBM1m8g5p1UgrFVQ3oR9zwIbmgI39JveA" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Image: <a href="https://www.insight.co.kr/news/463115">Insight</a> screenshot</td></tr></tbody></table><br />I had to do a double take to see if I was understanding that right. Turns out this phrase appears sometimes in Korean news headlines discussing amazing new advances in technology - advances so amazing and bewildering, so seemingly beyond the ordinary tech that we're used to, that we must have captured an alien somehow and tortured him until he revealed his secrets!</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgGDNKBhsw7LgMYVfZnU8iPw0UVJ8yBQfwwgLR19IL_IYpe2u6yfMADvQZE5I5_92KPYNXH4dj0hgTbZ5aHuNsdOCJe-iG_4RusMbaMq9U4brNAmqwrZYAFskyaqkeeJtWwZH4gNK7zJtcxjF8cy1lm3IyfJ0AZmPhURUo57tvmzve_wBV4kSXA9sELrA" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1480" data-original-width="1188" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgGDNKBhsw7LgMYVfZnU8iPw0UVJ8yBQfwwgLR19IL_IYpe2u6yfMADvQZE5I5_92KPYNXH4dj0hgTbZ5aHuNsdOCJe-iG_4RusMbaMq9U4brNAmqwrZYAFskyaqkeeJtWwZH4gNK7zJtcxjF8cy1lm3IyfJ0AZmPhURUo57tvmzve_wBV4kSXA9sELrA" width="193" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Other news articles showing the "alien torture" phrase</td></tr></tbody></table><br />The NamuWiki page for the phrase suggests one possible origin (or at least an early documented use) might have been <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Road_Not_Taken_(short_story)">a sci-fi short story from the 1980s</a> where humans capture an alien and get it to confess the source of its technology with a neat twist ending I won't spoil here. </div><div><br /></div><div>I wonder what other neat secrets all these aliens will reveal under threat of torture. How do you torture an alien anyway? Google's Gemini gave me some generic crap about how harming any life form is unacceptable. ChatGPT meanwhile suggested:</div><div><blockquote>Genetic Manipulation: If human's genetic engineering has advanced to a level where they can temporarily alter the alien's genetic structure, by inducing pain or discomfort through genetic modifications, humans might coerce the alien into revealing vital information.</blockquote></div><div>Not bad. Mutate him into having his butt empty its contents directly into his mouth until he shows us how to mine Bitcoin at light speed. Welcome to Earth! </div><div><br /></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><br />=====<br />

So all these logos feature a blue dragon in some way.</p><p>I saved most of these real quick to my downloads folder and forgot about them. Since today is the first full moon of the new year, here's a chance to pause, catch up, and make a big logo dump. Some of these were from solar new year, most from lunar new year. It's only really for verifying ID inside offices, banks, convenience stores, and apparently Lotte Mart self-checkouts. </p><p>There <i>is</i> a mobile drivers license, but you <a href="https://www.mobileid.go.kr/mip/hps/issuReqstGuidance/issuReqstGuidanceMdl.do">first need to have an IC license card</a> that you then connect to the app. My license is still non-IC. So I figure when it's time to renew, I presume all new licenses come with the IC chip so I'll get it eventually. I'm not in a big rush. </p><p>Anyway it's not a bad idea to consider this. When I buy alcohol there's always a lady right there who beeps the approval anyway which to me is actually easier than taking out my phone and opening another app. I guess I'm still a luddite in some ways. </p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/living_in_korea_now/comments/1aovdxu/age_verification_via_pass_app_at_selfcheckout_in/"></a></p><div class="blogger-post-footer"><br />=====<br />

With such high technological prowess, why do so many Korean websites seem outdated and, for lack of a better word, useless?</p><p></p><blockquote><p>For the last couple 0f decades, Naver has been the leading online information source for Koreans. But Revere explains that, unlike Google, Naver isn’t primarily a search engine — it is a vast digital ecosystem that seeks to corral every search into another aspect of its massive repository of content, primarily user generated. In addition to its question-and-answer platform KnowledgeiN, there are Naver Blogs, Naver Cafes, Naver Videos, Naver Shopping, Naver Encyclopedia, Naver Travel and Naver Sports among others.</p><p>Naver’s inward-looking digital environment has its advantages. Content on Naver is closely monitored, significantly reducing dead links and error pages. But this system has inadvertently led to a gap in web development skills among Korean businesses, Revere explains.</p><p>“Naver’s dominance has disincentivized Korean businesses from investing in world-class websites, and Korean website developers tend to not learn cutting-edge technologies because there’s little client demand,” he said. “A website in Korea doesn’t have to be good. Its mere existence establishes just enough credibility, and that’s primarily what Korean businesses are looking for from their website. It’s not a sales tool, because no one will find their website from a non-branded search on Naver anyway.”</p><p><a href="https://koreatimes.co.kr/www/special/2024/02/177_368587.html">Taking Korean companies to the top of online search engines - The Korea Times</a></p></blockquote><p><a href="https://koreatimes.co.kr/www/special/2024/02/177_368587.html"></a></p><p>Interestingly, pasting that blockquote made me notice that the "of" up there in the first line is somehow a zero instead of the letter O. Although visually similar, I'm at a loss to figure out how the heck that happened in the first place. Would anyone accidentally type a zero instead of an O? I guess they are indeed near each other on a keyboard so it's possible. Weird that autocorrect wouldn't take care of that. </p><p>Anyway, I think his take is 100% correct. </p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhY9epsUKNBQf6_yS_JUGg7rPHb9bw-uLWjzIkh5EJ_lAj1wAS3TlS_sHxsKd0_77xvmHx9qY9zjkxyvrLtufo61xzVxtZ4gBIEJvFXKIFTP4DF91ecs_NLFSl6wbFDweKUcLGdL41-Ge8zW3HY-cgCY7OyxuQENc5JDoxeNj_W957t5gCL_4y5AHK1yg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="354" data-original-width="700" height="162" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhY9epsUKNBQf6_yS_JUGg7rPHb9bw-uLWjzIkh5EJ_lAj1wAS3TlS_sHxsKd0_77xvmHx9qY9zjkxyvrLtufo61xzVxtZ4gBIEJvFXKIFTP4DF91ecs_NLFSl6wbFDweKUcLGdL41-Ge8zW3HY-cgCY7OyxuQENc5JDoxeNj_W957t5gCL_4y5AHK1yg" width="320"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Naver goggles up shopping. Some of these are from "여론조사" (public opinion polling). These are usually from political campaigns and are annoying calls that you likely do not want to participate in or receive. <div><br></div><div>In fact here's an article out today that details some of the headaches with these types of calls:</div><div><br></div><div></div><blockquote><div>Recently, people have criticized that there are too many phone polls about the upcoming general election. Many people said online that they were stressed by the constant phone polls during the Lunar New Year holidays. Mobile operators provide voters' mobile numbers to pollsters, but the recent increase in opinion polls has led to an increase in requests from subscribers of the three major mobile carriers to refuse to provide virtual phone numbers.</div><div><br></div><div><a href="https://english.khan.co.kr/khan_art_view.html?code=710100&artid=202402151646547&medid=enkh">People suffer from phone polls ahead of general election | People suffer from phone polls ahead of general election - The Kyunghyang Shinmun</a></div></blockquote><div><a href="https://english.khan.co.kr/khan_art_view.html?code=710100&artid=202402151646547&medid=enkh"></a><br><div><br></div><div>They often appear under "050" numbers. I promised I would do some kind of Goodbye 2023 post, but that didn't happen. And here is the reason: I'm lazy. </p><p>Sure, I mean to do continue my trend and look at Naver's Top Search Terms for 2023 and maybe explain them a bit in English. But looking at this year's list, it was the most boring possible content I've ever seen. I have a very strong suspicion that these keyword lists are not true representations of what Netizens were searching for and instead are just the result of an approval process where questionable, sensational, or non-PC search terms were removed. The results from Google and Naver feel especially bland. Most are just the names of TV shows or movies. </p><p>So instead of looking up what all these TV shows are about since I don't even watch TV anyway, I'll just list the relevant posts were you can check for yourself. And include a standard list of interesting links from the new year season. </p><p>Spring is seemingly in the air today as February starts. So why not relax and enjoy some interesting links collected by yours truly. </p><h3 style="text-align: left;">End of Year 2023 Links</h3><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjGUor3BIAk7DeM3t3WMXRxUas8pA1RCA-cDwqGFNK8FYIYZF7VZ44dvo9jPZu5bc3UVS-go7VeatZ_sX6gP3PWQak2DRoKKv37qtgXOXv3V7nxZCuAMszV7pbwTLZ2Hso2M_Tzw_hJJKX1BEGnMBtBRFoPvlFARFYbl7_YaZLPiTuP3g1NwzyjRs13xg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4206" data-original-width="2898" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjGUor3BIAk7DeM3t3WMXRxUas8pA1RCA-cDwqGFNK8FYIYZF7VZ44dvo9jPZu5bc3UVS-go7VeatZ_sX6gP3PWQak2DRoKKv37qtgXOXv3V7nxZCuAMszV7pbwTLZ2Hso2M_Tzw_hJJKX1BEGnMBtBRFoPvlFARFYbl7_YaZLPiTuP3g1NwzyjRs13xg" width="165"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Naver trending topics 2023</td></tr></tbody></table><p></p><p>Here's a copy of Naver's top trending topics for the year, which saw noticeable rise in searches compared to last year, so give a hint at what topics were especially popular this year. As I said, most are TV shows or movies, sports events, or major natural disasters. Nothing juicy if you ask me. The actual top searches list is even more boring, and as usual, shows that the vast majority of Naver searches are just stuff like "YouTube" or "weather". </p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhu8MBiKDAjRWt7irT-DsLrDT11FcX6c2ZV1-vM8RT-hsH-xk-eu1c-104k3xaYS_dDaEtWmMuun3KfXNXE2x11P1p__BEoEXVQB3QosXBR4RNwaj1eudQhcHHCpFcfWYDBMmXRLm6CFgoW6oAMTg3Ilz18OfZafTBpynzViuGigt5Eyy-LwFB4PmsvoQ" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="620" data-original-width="1000" height="198" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhu8MBiKDAjRWt7irT-DsLrDT11FcX6c2ZV1-vM8RT-hsH-xk-eu1c-104k3xaYS_dDaEtWmMuun3KfXNXE2x11P1p__BEoEXVQB3QosXBR4RNwaj1eudQhcHHCpFcfWYDBMmXRLm6CFgoW6oAMTg3Ilz18OfZafTBpynzViuGigt5Eyy-LwFB4PmsvoQ" width="320"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Google's Top 10 searches in Korea and abroad 2023</td></tr></tbody></table><p>The Google list at least shows a little more interesting stuff. </p><p>Like cartoonist Joo Ho-min who made big news because of his instance on his special needs son being put in normal classrooms, and the controversy surrounding what to do when his kid inevitiably acts up in class. Should the attempt to integrate special needs kids trump the "normal" kids' rights to study in peace and safety? </p><p></p><div>The death of actor Lee Seon-kyun made the list. As did two high profile knife stabbing rampages.</div><div><br></div><div>See the full lists yourself:</div><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><a href="https://blog.naver.com/naver_search/223299548086">2023년 네이버 검색어 결산을 공개합니다. : 네이버 블로그</a> - Naver's Top Search Terms 2023</li><li><a href="https://blog.google/intl/ko-kr/products/explore-get-answers/year-in-search-2023-kr/">구글 ‘올해의 검색어’로 돌아보는 2023년</a> - Google's Top Korea Search Terms 2023</li></ul><p></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Other End of 2023 lists:</h3><span></span><a href="https://10wontips.blogspot.com/2024/02/links-for-end-of-year-2023-new-year.html#more">Continue reading... »</a><div class="blogger-post-footer"><br />=====<br />

Here is a roundup of some that I noticed online. This year, 2024, is the year of the blue dragon (2024년 갑진년). I have never in my life seen 갑(甲) be used to mean "blue" but I'm certainly no Korean expert. Seems to literally mean "<a href="https://dic.daum.net/word/view.do?wordid=kkw000005918&q=%EA%B0%91%EC%A7%84%EB%85%84">heavenly / from the sky</a>" and therefore we get "blue". </p><p> Anyway you'll notice then that most of these incorporate imagery of a blue dragon. </p><p>I'll use the Zum one as the main post image because it's the coolest.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; Today I'll document my misadventures at my local Korean post office, which actually turned out pretty informative over all. So I figured I'd write a quick post about it because maybe it can help some others out there. </p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg-ad7XxvtglC_FMjpftkVFZEkF4tyEQ3lM22Hel8uVRRGfgxNe1IQV_WOjZZNUs4z-3ijmbi68pwP0r4URspn0wmupWqBq0rsK5B-loETIwN1XRR7opPCtftqO26Fi_whSWRR2SKm-36eHFQICGRM96D_b3myiipDY4AB8fHeRWIEaZrAakQq6Eg3Ehg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="812" data-original-width="2224" height="117" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg-ad7XxvtglC_FMjpftkVFZEkF4tyEQ3lM22Hel8uVRRGfgxNe1IQV_WOjZZNUs4z-3ijmbi68pwP0r4URspn0wmupWqBq0rsK5B-loETIwN1XRR7opPCtftqO26Fi_whSWRR2SKm-36eHFQICGRM96D_b3myiipDY4AB8fHeRWIEaZrAakQq6Eg3Ehg" width="320"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Different shipping methods to pre-register for on Korea Post website</td></tr></tbody></table><br>Basically, it comes down to this: what, really, is the difference between these 4 methods of shipping packages at the post office?:<p></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>국제특급(EMS) (normal international registered mail)</li><li>EMS프리미엄 (premium registered mail)</li><li>국제소포 (standard international parcel shipping)</li><li>소형포장물(등기) (small parcel shipping)</li></ul><p></p><p>Granted, there is information about all these online, so I will skip over that stuff, and just explain what I personally experienced this week and noted down from a rather lengthy and awkward conversation with the postal worker where I realized there is a ton of vocab that I did not know.
