Top Tweeted Keywords in South Korea in 2021

  1. 코로나19
    COVID-19
  2. 대선
    Presidential election

Not happening this year, but next year, so the candidacy period was in full swing in 2021 with plenty to discuss between main candidates Lee Jae-myung and Yoon Seok-youl. Lee has taken up top spots on these lists for several years now. The quintessential politician with all sorts of dirty laundry I've discussed before in previous years' versions of these lists
  3. 화천대유
    Hwacheon Daeyu Asset Management

This hot issue case revolved around supposed corruption and bribery over a land development scheme in Seongnam City when its provincial governor was Lee Jae-myung, the now presidential candidate. A number of people involved with this scheme have wound up dead. Plenty to read about on this case.
  4. 도쿄올림픽
    Tokyo Olympics
  5. 재난지원금
    Emergency Stimulus money
  6. 기본소득
    Basic income

A policy advocated by candidate Lee Jae-myung that has wide support from the public but which as far as I can tell would be paid for by a yearly tax of 1/10th the house price of homeowners. I get the idea of taking money from wealthy real estate owners but seems like in 10 years time a normal family who owns one home that didn't rise much in value would be screwed. But hey I'm no economist.
  7. 서울시장선거
    Seoul Mayoral By-election

Required after the former mayor of Seoul (Park Won-soon) committed suicide after accusations of sexual harassment.
  8. 비트코인
    Bitcoin
  9. 아동학대
    Child abuse

This topic likely stimulated by the infamous Jeong-in case (see list below), in which an adopted baby was beaten and tortured to death by her adoptive parents.
  10. 차별금지법
    Anti-Discrimination Law

An often proposed by yet to be passed piece of legislation, probably hi-lighted again this year by the suicide of a transgender soldier (see list below).

Top Tweeted-about people in South Korea in 2021

  1. 김연경 선수
    Athlete Kim Yeon-koung

A famous and well-liked Olympic volleyball player, active on SNS and affectionately known as the "shikbang unni" (bread sister) for the way she often is seen to mouth the words "shikbang!" on TV broadcasts of their matches. Of course "shikbang" is not what she's saying at all but it's a more family friendly version of what she's actually mouthing. If you know anything about Korean you know what I mean. It actually somehow got her a product promotion deal with a bakery. chain.
  2. 정은경 질병관리청장
    Korean CDC leader Jeong Eun-Kyeong

The face you saw on TV whenever COVID related rules and regulations were announced.
  3. 정인
    Jeong-in

Name given to the adopted baby who was tortured to death by her adoptive parents in a hideous situation that at least brought everyone together in their condemnation of the crime
  4. 이대훈 선수
    Athlete Lee-Daehoon

Taekwondo Olympian who failed to pass the round of 16. For inventing the sport, Korea's been doing surprisingly poor in Olympic Taekwondo lately.
  5. 안산 선수
    Athlete An San

Popoular Olympic archery competitor who sadly seemed to get more attention for her supposed stances on feminism issues than her excellent archery skill.
  6. 황교익 맛 칼럼니스트
    Food columnist Hwang Gyoik

Reporter who dared to pen his opinion that Korean fried chicken is just not that great, and unleashed a firestorm of netizen anger and industry rage. More funny than his original opinion was the over the top way the Korean Chicken Industry attacked him with insane sounding rhetoric right out of a North Korean retaliation threat. See the tweet below.
  7. 신유빈 선수
    Athlete Shin Yubin

Teenager table tennis player who made it to the Olympics
  8. 변희수 하사
    Sergeant Byun Hui-su

Korea's first openly transgender soldier, who had wanted to continue serving but was drummed out of the corps before finally committing suicide. A big reason the anti-discrimination law, or the need for one, was discussed this year.
  9. 허니재이
    Honey-J

Popular dancer on the popular K-competitive show "Street Woman Fighter." I even featured her in a tweet about her appearing inside Hancom's crazy relaunching of Cyworld called Hancom Town.
  10. 이재용 부회장
    Vice-chairman Lee Jae-yong

De-facto leader of Samsung Electronics, who was in and out of jail this year due to arguably politically motivated interests. His role in the pandemic's affect on Korea would make a great if controversial book research project.

That's all for now. Check the full Twitter blog post for more lists on the year's top politicians, dramas, and K-pop related tweets.
