ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude can use Hangul HWP files

It's been a long time since I've done a post about opening or working with Hangul HWP/HWPX files but here's another neat thing you can do: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude can all parse both HWP and HWPX files. So you can use the full power of these AI models to do basically whatever you want with the documents.

You don't need any special program to open them first and extract text or anything. Just upload the pure .HWP files right into the chatbots and ask what you want.

Example: Summarizing HWP information in English

Here's a simple example. I download a couple of random documents from the internet:

  1. an application for joining a baseball team in the more open HWPX format
  2. an application for hosting the KBO all-star game in the older and relatively more closed HWP format
I then uploaded them to the AIs and asked them to summarize the documents in English. None of the bots had any issues reading either file. Here are the results.

The two documents you provided are official forms related to South Korean professional baseball. The first is an application for a local government to host the KBO All-Star Game, and the second is an application package for players wishing to join a specific professional club (Ulsan).

1. 2025 KBO All-Star Game Hosting Application

This document is a formal template for local governments (cities or counties) to apply for the right to host the 2025 KBO All-Star Game. It focuses on evaluating the infrastructure and administrative support of the bidding region.

  • Accessibility & Infrastructure: Asks for distances and travel times to the stadium from airports, express bus terminals, subway stations, and KTX/SRT train stations.

  • Accommodation: Requires a list of nearby hotels (star ratings, room counts, and average prices).

    • Necessity: Why the region needs the event and how it differs from other cities.

    • Suitability: Quality of stadium facilities and surrounding amenities.

    • Proactivity: Budget support, fee waivers, and marketing/promotion plans.

    • Safety & Logistics: Cooperation with police, fire, and medical services.

  • Stadium Status: Technical specs including seating capacity, lighting (lux levels), grass type, and parking fees.

  • Self-Introduction (Annex 4): A 2-page essay covering motivation, career goals, and "organizational adaptability." Notably, applicants are warned not to mention their school name or birthplace to ensure a "blind" hiring process.

  • Legal & Ethical Consent:

    • Personal Information: Consent for data collection and verification of documents.

    • Disciplinary Record (Annex 8): A sworn statement that the player has no disqualifying disciplinary history under KBO regulations or club rules.

I now have enough content from both documents to provide a thorough summary. Here's what each document is:

Document 1: 2025 KBO 올스타전 유치 신청서

2025 KBO All-Star Game Hosting Bid Application

This is an official application form used by a local government (municipality) to formally apply to host the 2025 KBO (Korea Baseball Organization) All-Star Game. It appears to be addressed to the KBO Commissioner.

Key sections of the form include:

  • Applicant Information — Name of the local government, the authorizing official (e.g., a county mayor/governor), and contact details for responsible staff members.

  • General Status of the Municipality — Population, average monthly temperature, distance/travel time from major transportation hubs (highway bus terminals, subway stations), and available accommodation (hotels with average pricing).

  • Supporting Facilities — Available cultural venues, gyms, performance halls, exhibition spaces, and nearby parking.

  • Key Evaluation Criteria — The form asks the applicant to address:

    • Necessity & Justification: Why they want to host and what differentiates their city.

    • Proactiveness: Budget support, fee waivers, promotional resources (banners, channels, etc.), and other assistance (e.g., police support).

In short: One document is a municipal bid form for hosting a KBO All-Star Game event, and the other is a player tryout/recruitment application form for a professional baseball team based in Ulsan, South Korea. Both are sports-related Korean administrative documents in the Hancom HWP/HWPX format.

Other use cases

For being totally free, this is a pretty amazing service. I never even thought about mentioning this although there's a guy at work that is dropping HWPs and Hancell files into ChatGPT all the time to pull out data. And Hancom itself is offering something like this for subscription customers. I actually thought about mentioning it today when I noticed ChatGPT encouraging me to do it myself:

Since I know a lot of foreigners struggle sometimes with HWP files, here's a convenient new tool to add to your belt. There are lots of ways of opening these files today (some I mentioned before) but nice to be able to just drop a whole stash of them in and work with them. They don't seem to be uploadable in NotebookLM but dumping them into one of these bots could be an easy way to organize or extract some info you need.

I'm just spitballing but for example, consider

  • some foreign parents who are enrolling their child in school and the school sends a bunch of HWPs in the class group chat with rules and schedules etc. Could be useful to dump all those into a chat and be able to ask it questions in whatever you native language is (assuming you trust the responses not to be hallucinations).
  • getting a bunch of HWP files from your real estate agent and bank loan officer and having the chatbot parse them and surface they key details you're looking for, in your own language
  • dumping the instruction manual you downloaded from your smarthome's company website and asking the bot how to change the temp in a single room according to the instructions
A lot of options. You'd probably want to double check the info for accuracy but in casual circumstances this could be an interesting way to organize your life and "discuss" with a bot. A parent for example might just want to add all school communications into a chat and be able to reference them throughout the year.

Happy chatbotting.
