Fortnite is now available to play in Korea and will no doubt challenge homegrown PUBG for domination of PC Bangs. The makers of Fortnite, that super popular battle royale-type shooter where you also build stuff that has captured the hearts of young teens and questionably-adult men the world over, has picked up lovable Chris Pratt to do some Korea specific promotional segments.
You can see some of the advertisement posters here, but what I thought was pretty hilarious was the commercials.
I've come across 4 so far, and they all employ the same theme: having Chris Pratt taunt Korean gamers in much the same way that people would call Marty McFly a chicken.
He tries to get a rise out of the gamer audience by implying that they are noobs and easily beaten at this piece-of-cake game, with some accompanying version of a Korean narrator going: there are some lines you just don't cross, as if these insults on Korea's gaming prowess are acts of war, and it's time for Koreans to suit up, game up, and start playing to prove him wrong.

In this one, Chris says "And when I play Fortnite with Koreans, I find it especially , I don't know, EASY." And the Korean gamer gets pissed, and says some version of
This phrase makes its way into all the advertisements.
So then it's the call to arms:
Chris teases about how he and I guess most Westerners have so much free time for fun, while Koreans are always balli-balling around uselessly or something. Same idea, same tag lines.
Here Chris tells us the prize for winning is 천억원 (100 billion won, 88 million dollars, though really it's $100 million). Dang. Then we're taunted about Koreans getting 빵원 (zilch, nada, zero) of that unless they play. Then a cheesy bread pun with 빵 and that tag line again.
This one gets a little more clever. We're told that:
But then Chris lays down the smack talk right on top of all that:
Then the old man, insulted to the core we're sure, repeats the 건들지 말걸 건드렸구만 tag line. And a new call to arms:
Overall these are cute commercials. Everybody loves Chris Pratt and a quick reactions search suggests that even if some netizens doubt Fortnite will be that popular, they think Starlord's use of these Koreans words and his obvious enjoyment of making these CFs is super cute.
Meanwhile I'm wondering how much this issue will hang over the game's potential popularity here: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Studio Is Suing Over Fortnite.
I just wish I had time to sit on my ass at PC bang and waste the hours away shooting people up. A man can dream.
UPDATE: Looks like the site Branding in Asia basically used this post as their research into this ad promotion. Glad to be of service guys, but a little link-a-doodle would be nice.
