Follow KakaoTalk Plus Friends or Talk Channels without KakaoTalk

Kakao Plus Friends (soon to be renamed "Talk Channels" / or maybe not) are businesses and services you can "follow" on KakaoTalk to get updates, announcements, and coupons. They show up in your friends list and chat list and are a convenient way to follow organizations you are interested in.

But these Plus Friends posts are really just online posts hosted by Kakao that display inside KakaoTalk. They look native in the app but you can check them from any browser.

This can be useful if you'd rather follow a brand anonymously or simply aren't interested in getting notifications for every new thing they post. For example, I like seeing the Uniqlo weekly discounts, but only if I'm already planning to drop by there this week. So for me, rather than follow Uniqlo's Plus Friends channel in KakaoTalk and get their notices every week, I'll just bookmark the site and visit it when I'm heading down there to see what's on sale.

How to find Plus Friends public postings

There's no direct search outside of KakaoTalk, but it's very easy using Google. Just add the website restriction. All Plus Friends feeds are hosted at the pf.kakao.com domain currently.

So for example, if I want to follow Citi bank's postings, I'll Google this:

site:pf.kakao.com 씨티

The first result is Citi Bank's Plus Friend feed at https://pf.kakao.com/_YzpVxh

Weirdly, this search brought up an adult content warning in the Google results. Odd. But other searches will not. Something about 씨티 is apparently triggering it. Maybe it thinks I mean "shitty" and am searching scat porn. Gross.

What's so dirty about searching 씨티?

Anyway here are some more examples to give you an idea of what you can search for:

A few things to remember:

  • There are no RSS feeds or anything associated with the online Plus Friends postings. So you can't really "follow" them aside from bookmarking and remembering to check back.
  • Some companies use the Plus Friend service to send customized messages to users (like delivery order statuses, etc) so obviously you won't get those from these public pages
