Links for Nov 2020 - April 2021

Here is a massive dump of links I've been sitting on for nearly half a year already. They're all interesting but also all mixed up and I am too lazy to sort through and separate them by Social Issues, Tech/Business, etc. Browse through at your leisure this weekend. There's likely to be at least a few gems of value for you in this massive pile.

I haven't been posting much here lately because, frankly, I'm tired. COVID-19 has made all kind of unexpected issues and I'm just dealing with a lot right now both at work and personally. Hard to get the motivation going to post here when gaming or TV shows or just the usual interesting internet stuff is out there ready to lull me into a zombie state.

By the way I highly recommend the drama Taxi Driver (모범택시). Great dialog and character writing. K-Drama really has stepped up its game in the last 5 years, at least from the point of view of somebody like me.

Enjoy the links because who knows when I'll be updating again.

And some links I posted on Twitter:

Despite shutting down their mobile phone business, LG still plans to sell their remaining product stock, offer A/S service support, release SW updates to Android 12 for major models. zdnet.co.kr/view/?no=20210…

A DCinside user extracted a working standalone 한글 Editor from Hancom Space, built Debian & Arch packages for it. I fired up the .deb on Ubuntu just now, opened a random HWP, and bingo. Works flawlessly.

Needs a little work if you ask me. Watch their MV and judge for yourself.

LG's AI-generated news announcer modeled after 이지애 (both together in pic). "She" can reflect different tones/moods depending on news delivery. Good for breaking news/disasters; no need for studio/staff, makeup, etc

A hiccup for full transition to Naver, Kakao,Toss based ID verification. Eventually will get there but for now phone # based authentication via carrier still tops. zdnet.co.kr/view/?no=20210…

It's happening, people. Hometax, the Korean IRS website and famously the last major holdout of the crappy old banking certificates ID tech, will switch to app-based ID (like Kakao or PASS app) in 2021.

TIL you can add a "friend" (a chatbot called 가지) in KakaoTalk and Facebook Messenger to search and purchase KORAIL train tickets right in the chat app. Also from inside Google Maps now. ga-g.onntapi.com

I never thought about how much big data analysis you could do on chat room emoji/sticker use. Certain ones correlate with age, gender, mood, vice versa. Here’s a (long) Kakao presentation: if.kakao.com/session/56

KakaoMap app has incorporated the "Kakao i" AI assistant. Can fully control navigation, Melon music playing, even sending KakaoTalk messages, with just your voice. Only Korean for now but it does recognize English words (not commands, for me) kakaomap.tistory.com/328

K-Visa is a startup broker app aiming to fill the gap between foreigners and immigration service. Has potential to reduce your headaches dealing with non-English staff/offices/websites.

Thank you for the links, I did indeed find some of them very interesting ^^
Don't let the feeling of "obligation to post" stress you out too much - these days everyone has to find their own ways of coping.

Appreciate the support. I'd love to post more in depth about some of these topics but just don't have the time or energy.
