Google-produced "Best of 2021" app awards videos, plus YouTube's top Korean videos for 2021

Just wanted to share a quick look at three cute little YouTube skits that Google Play produced to highlight the apps that won "best of" the year 2021. Viewers seemed to praise the chemistry between these two popular actors.

  • Park Hae-soo (박해수), who had a major role in Squid Game playing Cho Sangwoo - you know, the main character's friend who went to SNU Business School.
  • Jeon Yeo-been (전여빈), best known for her supporting role besides popular actor Song Joongki  in the Korean drama series "Vincenzo."

In the skits, the two act as "상-타" (sangta), a wordplay pun on Santa (산타) and 상 (sang, "award") + 타 (ta, "take it, receive it").

The skits involve the two going around a snowy Christmassy neighborhood knocking on doors and handing out awards to the apps that were voted as standout apps for 2021, with some kind of little theme related to the app.

I won't screenshot the whole thing, but just show a couple of examples.

When Beenie (what the international fans seem to affectionately call Jeon in the YouTube comments) approaches one door, option bubbles pop up asking her to choose a green door or a purple door. She chooses one and gives the award to the StoryPlay app, which offers choose-your-own-adventure type webtoons.

In another example, she tries to buy a coffee from the food truck before realizing she doesn't have any money on her. A teenage girl, however, has no problem paying by T-Money via her Galaxy Watch app.

In this way, the two hand out awards to all the top apps that won this year. I made a separate post about these apps if you are curious:

I was going to summarize the ads in full after I thought they were cute and noticed that many international fans had commented on the videos that they don't understand what they're saying, but in the short day between "maybe I should do a quick post about that" to now, YouTube has already added English subtitles to the videos. So no need!

Go ahead and watch the videos here. Just turn on English subs:

And if you're interested in the actual most popular Korean videos on YouTube for 2021, check out the showcase site YouTube produced listing them all nicely categorized and ready for clicking.

They are also discussed in detail on the YouTube Korea blog:

Honestly a lot of these have English subs anyway and the blog post can be auto-translated so there's not much reason to do more than link you to them.

One of the best trends of the year was the theme of "Ajeossis (middle aged men) singing current pop songs" and it is everything as wonderful as you expect.

Makes me almost miss noraebang sessions with the coworkers. Almost.
