Kakao unites Tistory, Brunch, KakaoStory under one portal: StoryHome

Kakao is introducing a new unified portal for accessing content from their SNS services, and calling it "Story."

Kakao now owns three seperate SNS services that focus on users making public or semi-public posts:

  • Tistory, a standard blogging service, similar to Wordpress/Blogger, with more focus on public issues or topics
  • Brunch, a "fancier" creator-focused blog-type platform with a focus on personal topics
  • Kakao Story, a more SNS-like place to post pictures and short posts, more focused on your KakaoTalk friends network
For readers who are interested, and perhaps to promote content on their own services, Kakao has made a portal site where content from all three of these seperate services come together and can easily be browsed. This combo is called simply "Story."

Each service can now be seen as a component, so there is Ti Story, Kakao Story, and Brunch Story. So most of the homepages or starting pages in the respective apps are being updated with greater focus on content from all three easily being accessible:

As part of this, an improved experience is coming to Tistory that helps highlight popular content and helps you discover new blogs to follow:

Anyone can access this new united feed at:

For example, here are a post from TiStory and a post from Brunch appearing together in the same topic based feed:

And here is the "Featured Creators" section that features one creator from each of the 3 services:

I wonder if this is hinting at a future unification of all three apps? It does seem a bit silly to maintain all three, but then again Naver maintains Blogs and Posts, though I personally think those overlap too much.

Naturally I would prefer a focus on blogs, since they are vastly easier to follow. TiStory and now Brunch too offer good RSS support.

Anyway it will be interesting to see how they expand on this momentum. Once upon a time, before it was owned by Kakao, I considered hosting Ten Won Tips in a TiStory blog. I hope it sticks around and can grow.
