Naver memorializes popular user: Jo Kwanghyun (조광현), aka "Nokya" (녹야)

In a cute gesture, Naver made a special blog post honoring a popular user who recently passed away.

"Naver Expert Grandpa" Jo Kwang-hyeon

Mr. Jo Kywang-huyn (조광현) went by the username Nokya (녹야, "green fields") on the Naver website Jishikin (지식인, "intellectual" though sometimes for the site appears as "Expert").

Jishikin is a Q-and-A style website similar to Quora or even Reddit. The site has a nice community feel where people can ask questions ranging from specific knowledge questions to general life advice. Popular answers can be upvoted for greater visibility.

Mr. Jo was apparently a popular user who, after a 30 year career as a dentist, took up answering questions on the site as a hobby in his old age, and since 2004 had been posting on the site. He gained a lot of positive karma / upvotes / reputation points (whatever you want to call 내공 in this case), based on his warm-hearted, honest, and helpful answers.

Mr. Jo was knowledgable in a variety of topics and had a writing style that earned him many fans.

Just to give one quick and cute example, look how he responded to this user's question:

How old is Santa? Image: Naver Jishikin

A user asked:

How old is Santa Claus?

Mr Jo's popular answer:

He's as old as your father.

I love this simple, folksy answer. It rings true, doesn't it? Santa is perpetually whatever age your father is. I love it.

Some of his answers were just plain goofy but amusing if you ask me, like:

Q. "엄마가 브래지어 하지 말라는데 어떡하죠?"

Q. My mom doesn't let me use a bra. What should I do?

A. 엄마 먼저 하나 사드리세요."

A. Buy one for her too.

If you need some explanation here, it's something like he purposefully and humorously misinterpreted the question. Mom won't let you use the bra? Maybe it's because she needs it more than you. So to solve the problem, buy her one too. Now there's a bra for both of you. Problem solved. I think this one doesn't really make sense in English.

Mr. Jo, hard at work sharing his folksy wisdom. Image: 네이버 '지식인' 답변 스타…녹야(綠野) 조광현옹 별세 | 연합뉴스

Even as his health began to deteriorate, Mr. Jo worked hard, even using magnifying glasses and wrist braces at the computer, to be able to share his wisdom on the site.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Jo, knowing you touched the brains and hearts of many netizens.
