Popular new Korean app Adot (에이닷 ) records and summarizes conversations, with some key limitations

Quick tip: here are some comments on the Adot app and some limitations for using it.

What is it?

The app, originally just SK's voice AI assistant, is touted as a great free way of recording calls on iPhone.

This, along with Apple Pay's lack of integration with the Korean public transit payment network, has been one of Koreans' major gripes about iPhones here. Those darn Galaxy users always get the best features. So no surprise people are thrilled by Adot ("ay-dot") which records calls for free.

Thus upon adding this feature, it currently skyrocketed to #1 on the Korean App Store.

What does it do?

Not only that, but it uses its AI tech to actually summarize the calls into convenient text files for you, extracting key info like discussed meeting times, events, phone numbers, etc. A true AI assistant that listens in and takes notes for you. No more awkwardly forgetting what that important business partner said, or when he said it. An entire record keeper at your fingertips! It can also save the entire audio of the call.

What are the limitations?

Here's a few limiting things about it:

  • Currently only for SKT subscribers.
  • It's a replacement call app. So you can't use the normal iPhone dialer with it. It will intercept incoming calls, and for outgoing calls you need to ensure you use the Adot dialer app.
  • May interfere with call notifications on Apple Watch
  • Currently not available outside Korea. You can only download it if your App Store is set to Korea.
  • Not available for MVNO "discount" phone users (so not for SK7 subscribers)

Where to download?

It's probably not as important for Android users, who've already had several call recording/summarizing options available.

Also interesting is that "A." is really just an update to the classic SK "Nugu" AI assistant with the fancy name Apollo reduced to "A.".
