How to change your review display name on Coupang

Here is a simple walkthrough of how to change your review name on Coupang reviews.

Changing the name associated with your Coupang reviews

Coupang let's you review products that you buy and rewards you with points, encouraging you to leave not only 1-5 star rankings but images and lenghty reviews. This helps the whole consumer community and since accounts are typically human-verified, you don't get as much junk or spam reviews like those that plague Amazon. If a product has a large amount of Coupang customer reviews, I'll usually go with that one. Not always, since people seem to have horrible taste when it comes to western food items. But usually.

But one problem is that if you registered with Coupang under your real name (as you usually must), you may find their "masking" of usernames to be less than ideal. By default, they will blot out a portion of your name with an asterisk. Probably fine if your name is something generic like 김지원 and all your reviews appear as 김*원 which would be nearly anything and anyone. But what if you show up as, just for an example, N*RDBERGSAM. That could dampen your desire to leave honest reviews. Pretty obvious who you are, so your negative review of that "stamina" drink you bought might possibly lead to an angry seller tracking you down, or just, you know, people knowing that you bought a "stamina" drink.

Luckily there's an easy way to adjust your name as it appears on reviews, without messing with your official name on the Coupang account.

Note: This must be done via the Coupang app. There seems to be no way to do this via the website.

Coupang app Review Management

In the app, go to the main menu for your account (by tapping the picture of the faceless head) and choose 리뷰 관리 (Review Management).

The Review settings will appear, showing all the products you can and have reviewed. You'll notice a little gear icon at the top that says 리뷰 설정 (Review settings). Click that. For some reason, that isn't offered on desktop. Don't ask me why.

Here, the only actual "settings" are how your name will be displayed.

  • 1st option (마스킹 처리 된 실명 사용) - Default where they "mask" your username with the asterisk. Not especially useful for foreign names.
  • 2nd option (실명 사용) - Just use your name. If you're brave or shameless.
  • 3rd option (닉네임 사용) - Use a custom nickname.
We want the 3rd option. Just type whatever username you want to appear in that box and press the button beside it to verify that the name is acceptable. If it is, you can hit the large blue button and you're done.

Now you can review to your heart's content. Happy reviewing.
