Links for March-June 2026

The heat is on and that means it is clearly summer now which makes me want to kick back in an air conditioned location with a large iced coffee to sip while reading about interesting Korean news links. OK actually I just forgot that I was sitting on this massive pile of "read it later" links to share and forgot that it's been almost 5 months since the last installment.

So kick back and enjoy some interesting news links about Korea from the past few months.

Since I know this is a huge list and some people don't like perusing a massive numbered list, here are some AI summaries of the items. Not everybody loves these AI LLMs but they've made a lot of boring work way faster and I'm not going to lie, my boss is happy that I seem pretty good at using it for sorting stuff at work especially how good it is at finding details from old documents. So I'm a fan. If you're not, scroll down to the real hand curated list of links.

AI overview of all links

On the technology front, AI has evolved from a back-end novelty into a consumer staple, evidenced by Naver’s widespread deployment of its AI Tab, Daangn Market automating marketplace listings with generative text, and interactive character chatbots like Zeta eclipsing mobile gaming in user session length. This digital leap, however, has exposed new vulnerabilities, including high-profile data leaks at streaming services like TVing and highly sophisticated scams where bad actors use AI-generated images to fake restaurant complaints or manufacture viral public hoaxes, such as the widely reported "escaped wolf" incident.

Simultaneously, the country is undertaking a massive overhaul of its financial and transportation frameworks to better accommodate foreigners. Apple Pay and EMV contactless terminals are rapidly spreading to neighborhood mom-and-pop shops via Toss and Hyundai Card, while major public transport systems, express bus bookings, and food delivery giants like Baemin have opened their doors to foreign-issued credit cards. Yet, even as legal policies expand—such as the introduction of telemedicine for overseas patients and the relaxation of student visa age limits—deep-seated domestic and social challenges persist. South Korea continues to grapple with the structural collapse of its traditional *jeonse* housing system, a dramatic decline in E-2 English teaching visa applications, ongoing debates over political polarization in consumer spaces like Starbucks, and mounting concerns over an uncontained wave of thefts targeting the country's ubiquitous unmanned convenience stores.

AI Thematic Topic Summaries

Technology & Digital Ecosystems

South Korea's tech ecosystem is undergoing a paradigm shift toward "conversational daily life" and ubiquitous AI utility. Major search portals have consolidated their AI strategies, with Naver introducing its conversational AI Tab and Daum integrating Upstage's Solar LLM to summarize search queries. In retail, hyper-convenience reigns supreme: Daangn Market utilizes AI to auto-write secondhand sales descriptions, while platforms like Papago allow users to photograph storefronts to instantly translate menus and populate local maps. Despite these advancements, the digital space faces rising friction. Local platforms are actively fighting international giants, as seen by local music streaming platforms losing massive user bases to YouTube Music. Furthermore, the rapid growth of generative tech has outpaced security, leading to a rise in AI-fabricated product scams, viral image hoaxes, and automated AI blog spamming tools that threaten to compromise local web indexing.

Society, Politics & Culture

Public spaces and everyday consumer activities have become increasingly politicized and culturally complex. The intense domestic political divide found an unusual outlet inside Starbucks branches, where right-wing voters began altering their digital mobile nicknames into political slogans to force baristas to call them out loud. In media, public fascination with vigilante justice surged following the immense popularity of the Netflix series *True Education*, prompting local politicians to suggest importing its harsh fictional disciplinary measures into reality. On the streets, growing safety concerns over electric scooters and micro-mobility prompted the Seoul government to institute a blanket ban on e-scooters and large lithium-ion batteries across the subway network. Meanwhile, cultural trends skew heavily toward short-form digital consumption, with local YouTube creators like KimPro outstripping massive global icons in viewership, even as teens continue to rapidly drift away from traditional religious affiliations.

Immigration, Tourism & Foreigner Integration

In response to a post-pandemic tourism boom and acute domestic labor shortages, the government and major tech platforms have introduced sweeping accessibility upgrades for non-Koreans. Naver launched a pioneering passport-based identity verification feature, allowing short-term tourists to easily make local food deliveries, access ticketing platforms, and secure reservations without a domestic mobile phone number. Transport networks have shifted toward global compliance, with hundreds of Seoul subway stations, express bus ticketing apps, and Klook rail booking platforms integrating international credit card compatibility. Additionally, immigration laws were eased to allow international students and their parents to extend their domestic stays until the age of 24. However, this influx of global attention has been met with growing pain points, including a dramatic rise in malicious financial scams targeting foreign tourists and a sharp, continuous six-year decline in E-2 visa applications for foreign English teachers.

Economy, Retail & Labor Market

The retail and corporate landscapes are shifting under the weight of changing consumer habits and major international movements. The domestic internet landscape witnessed a massive milestone with the quiet termination of 11-Street's five-year global e-commerce partnership with Amazon, signaling a shift where local shoppers prefer direct overseas purchasing over curated portal collaborations. In domestic transport, a clear divide has formed where T Map retains a massive 70% monopoly over turn-by-turn driving navigation, while Naver Map dominates pedestrian and public transit commuting. Consumer hubs have fundamentally changed for younger crowds, giving rise to the popular contraction "올다무" (*Ol-Da-Mu*), which highlights Olive Young, Daiso, and Musinsa as the definitive, dominant trifecta for budget cosmetics, lifestyle goods, and fashion. Finally, on the corporate scale, Samsung's chip division continues to mint record-breaking employee bonuses amid the global AI hardware boom, while retail heavyweights like CJ Olive Young are aggressively branching outward with physical brick-and-mortar stores in the United States.

AI's Top 5 pics for News Headlines for Foreigners in Korea

  1. Naver Introduces Passport Identity Verification for Foreign Travelers Why it matters: This eliminates the infamous "Korean phone number requirement" barrier, allowing tourists and short-term residents to seamlessly utilize Naver-based ticketing, food deliveries, and restaurant reservation apps using just their passports.
  2. Seoul Subway Bans E-Scooters and Large Lithium Batteries Why it matters: Commuters utilizing personal electric mobility devices or carrying large lithium-based battery packs face a complete ban on the Seoul transit network, directly altering daily travel logistics.
  3. Major Local Transport, Delivery, and Booking Apps Open to Foreign Credit Cards Why it matters: The structural integration of international cards into Baemin, express bus scheduling, and 273 Seoul subway stations vastly reduces the daily friction of navigating and buying services without local banking credentials.
  4. Emergency Ready App Upgraded to Brand-New iOS/Android Software Why it matters: The national disaster alert system has migrated to a completely separate, updated app. Current expats must manually download the new version to ensure they receive critical localized safety, weather, and missing person alerts.
  5. Apple App Store Implements Strict Korean Telecom Age-Verification Rules Why it matters: Downloading or updating mature content (19+ applications, games, or media streaming) now strictly mandates verification via a local mobile phone carrier account, standardizing Apple’s ecosystem with Korean legal frameworks.
