Improve speed of Naver Maps with quick setting change

Naver Map on the desktop underwent a big upgrade a few years ago. The tile imagery became a lot more clear, responsive, and updated. This was part of their redesign that got rid of raster based images in favor of vector based images, which means that the responsiveness of your zooming in and out should have improved greatly, and also their ability to update map tile imagery should have become easier.

But apparently as part of this change, some desktop users, especially those using Chrome browser on a Windows PC (so, basically everyone), may have noticed some sluggish behavior. Naver Map imagery on desktop could have been slow loading or not well responsive.

So Naver released a quick tip on their mapping blog for fixing this issue. I can't say I've noticed it personally, but if you are affected, try this simple toggle.

Toggle rendering method on Naver Map desktop

Just go to map.naver.com on the desktop, and tap the 3-dots "더보기" (See More...) menu item in the side-bar.

Then choose 설정 (Settings):

Scroll down a little to find the "지도 설정" (Map Settings) section, which currently only has one item in it, 렌더링 모드 (Rendering Mode).

Settings for Naver Map on desktop

There are 4 options here:

  • 자동 (Automatic)
  • 하이브리드 (Hybrid)
  • 벡터 (Vector)
  • 기본 (Normal)

Choose 기본 and refresh the page. The small link under that that appears is a click-to-refresh link.

Hopefully that will solve any issues you have.

This sets a cookie, so if you clear your browser data you might lose this setting and have to do it again.
