Clunky title, but you get the point. SK Telecom has a blog post up where they used AI to analyze the arrival and leaving habits of SKT customers' cell phones to come up with a Big Data look at where people tend to hang out during Christmas. This analysis is based on last year's Christmas Eve/Day habits. By "hang out" they apparently mean people congregate here from outside and then linger into the night.
No big surprises here, most of these spots are the places people would hang out anyway. But here's an overview anyway.
Most popular Christmas hangout spots in Korea's metropolitan capital area according to cell phone location data
I made the heading even clunkier than the title. But you get the point.
Like the spots shown in the picture, we have:
- Gwanghwamun Square
- Myeongdong Culture Street
- Lotte Department Store Headquarters Branch
- Myeongdong Cathedral
- Cheonggyecheon stream
The full list goes up to 20, but most are just shopping malls, theme parks, and normally popular nightlife areas.
Most popular Christmas hangout spots outside Korea's metropolitan capital area according to cell phone location data
Did you spot the word "outside" in the heading? Now this will be tricky because I am unfamiliar with these locations so I don't know why they are popular. I'll take a wild guess and assume these spots are hot at any time of the year.
- Dongseongro-ro (Daegu)
- Nampo-dong (Busan)
- Lotte Premium Outlet (Dong-Busan branch)
- Vivaldi Park Ski Resort (Gangwon Province)
- Hyundai Department Store "The Hyundai" (Daegu branch)
A lot more data is available the post, including a breakdown of prefered Christmas destinations by age group. No big surprises in that data either: old folks like visiting pretty scenery they can drive to, and young folks like nightlife in the cities.
